Pile Driving in West Springfield for the new Oncology Unit at Mercy Hospital.
General Contractor is Daniel O'Connell's and Sons, Inc.

Piles are sticking way up in the air because of a Geotechnical Engineering mistake.  Borings were conducted from original grade, and the recommendation for pile length in the report was from that elevation.  However, within the report they recommended excavating out 15 feet of fill, so the piles are 15 to 20 feet too long.  Not only are they too long, but the piles were made with reinforcement only in the end 20 feet.  Now, they are cutting more than 20 feet off the end of the pile, so they will have to modify the design and use a steel cap over the top of the pile.  Lesson learned.  Someone has to pay for that mistake!  Always pay attention to details!!!
Geotechnical Engineer  counts blows/foot.  Refusal (at Glacial Till) on this job was measured at 12 blows/inch.
