Served as primary therapist for caseload of addicts and served as the only Qualified Mental Health Professional, as designated by the federal courts to oversee treatment and make the major clinical decisions.  Provided family, individual, and group therapy to include video experiences and biofeedback procedures.

Led treatment on the Forensic Unit with acute and chronic patients, providing family and individual therapies.  Conducted groups with the criminally insane.  On the short and long‑term units, conducted psychosocial evaluation and assisted the psychiatrist in diagnostic assessments.  Developed and implemented treatment plans and discharge plans.  Conducted psychotherapy groups, as well as, relaxation groups with suicidal risk patients, epileptics, and those resistant to psychotropic drugs.  Supervised clinical intern students.

GRANT WRITING, RESEARCH AND

In 1979 and 1980, I was engaged in two team projects as a doctoral student.  An evaluation of Social Work doctoral dissertation research resulted in a publication and a presentation at a national conference.  The second, was a study of immigrants in New York City and resulted in a published monologue. 

During 1980 and 1981, I worked with the late Dr. Melvin Herman who was with the Columbia University Community Services, studying the impact of declining single room occupancy hotels (SROs).  I helped develop and conducted the statistical analysis on two survey questionnaires related to attitudes of Medical, Law, Public Health, and Social Work students working with SRO residents. 

In 1982 and 1983, I also led two surveys of college alcohol use and one program evaluation of a county's distribution of food stamps which resulted in two publications and one international conference presentation. 

My dissertation (completed in 1986) was an enormous quantitative research piece beginning with the questionnaire development and using extensive multivariate analyses to test psychosocial variables involved in college alcohol and drug use.  Two papers on the findings have been published in professional journals.

In 1987, I conducted a study among the elderly regarding longevity and health behaviors for a Scranton, PA Medical Hospital.  In 1988, I conducted a study of the scientific orientation of graduate MSW social workers and I presented my findings in March 1988 at the Conference of Social Work Education.

As well in 1988, I conducted a study of the attitudes of Catholics toward capital punishment.  The results were published in a number of newspapers including the national newspaper The Catholic Light.  Additionally, the United States Catholic Conference:  Department of Social Development and Work Peace used the report to help plan a major education effort. 

From 1988 through 1990, I wrote a proposal and developed a pilot program to reunite parents with their children.  The program provided supervised visits between foster children and their parents.  

In 1989, I was involved in a national evaluation of the affect of licensure on MSW Education.  The results were presented at the March 1988 Conference of Social Work Education.  A paper on the study has been published in a professional journal. 

Beginning in 1989 through 1990, I was Study Director of one of the six Barry University Homeless studies financed by the Victor Posner Homeless Fund.  This was a yearlong study to describe the number and nature of homelessness in South Florida. This was a major social research effort.  The results have been presented at three national conferences.

From 1989 through 1990, I was the principal evaluator for five Zayercare projects administrated by the Dade Community Foundation.  It was an evaluation and comparison of four parenting training programs for disadvantaged parents.  In addition, one evaluation of one self-esteem building programs for children in elementary schools.  This work resulted in one regional conference presentation.

As well, in 1989 and 1990, I completed a summative program evaluation of the Catholic Community Service program, Family Reunification project in Miami.  This was an in-depth program evaluation, which identified the strengths and weaknesses of the pilot project.  The evaluation covered the life of the project from the proposal to the final day of operations.

Summer of 1990, I develop an Outcome Evaluation System for Informed Families of Dade County, Miami, Florida.  The package was composed of eight instruments and a manual on scoring each.  One instrument was for children from first to fifth grade (pre and post).  A second was for sixth through twelfth grade (pre and post).  Five others were for parents, teachers, volunteers, principals and participants in workshops.

In 1991 as principal investigator, I conducted a needs assessment of AIDS Prevention Education in South Florida for the South Florida Community AIDS Partnership.  The approach used essential informants, snowball sampling and primarily focus groups to gather the data.

Lead the successful application writing for a surplus Naval property in Coconut Grove, FL, August, 1991 for the Miami Homeless Coalition.  The proposed use was as a homeless educational center.  The Property was valued at 10 million dollars.

In Nov. 1991 conducted ethnographic interviews of 50 runaway and homeless youth in the South Florida area.  This is one part of a larger study of 300 interviews around the United States.

Conducted a follow up study of AIDS Prevention Education in South Florida for the South Florida Community AIDS Partnership.

Evaluated the Community Homeless Assistance Project that operated from 8-15-91 to 1-15-92, a joint venture between the City, County and Community to help the homeless in Miami, FL.

Wrote a grant for the Dade County Mental Health Association that was funded through Ryan White Funds in 1992 ($100,000).

Wrote a grant to develop a DAWN Project at three inner city schools that was funded by the Governor's Drug Free Community office in 1992 ($67,000 for 5 years).

Collaborated on writing a SAM Project grant that was funded by the Governor's Drug Free Community office in 1992 ($67,000 for 5 years).

Wrote a grant to develop an evaluation system for the Broward Child's Service Board programs that was funded in 1992 ($35,000 a year for three years).

Wrote a grant to develop mental health programming at three inner city schools in 1993 ($200,000 a year for two years).

Conducted a study for We Will Rebuild Inc, on the effects of a major natural disaster (Hurricane Andrew) on homeless in 1994.

Conducted a study for the Legal Aid Services agency of greater Miami on the impact of FEMA services on the victims of Hurricane Andrew a year after the disaster, 1994-1995.

Conducted a study for Comprehensive Community Revitalization Program of New York to do a follow-up study of an intervention in two HUD housing projects, 1994-1995.

Lead a self-study of St. Luke's Addiction Recovery Center, Miami, Florida in the spring of 1996.

Wrote a proposal and received a grant to develop and implement a Restorative Summer School program for 40 of the highest at risk children and their parents. This project was funded at $45,000 a year.  The evaluation component followed the children and parents through out the 1996/97 school year.

Wrote a proposal and received a grant to develop and implement a WEB page for a substance abuse prevention program called SAMS, Substance Abuse Ministry. This project was funded at $49,000 for 1998. 

Wrote a proposal and received a grant for $147,000 from Department of Children & Family to develop and implement a program in 1997/98 to service the dually diagnosed at St. Luke’ Addiction Center.

Wrote proposals for the Biscayne Institute and they received $100,000 for 5 years in 2001 from the Alliance for Human Services Miami-Dade County. 

MEDIA RECOGNITION

Although I dislike talking to journalist, because of my work and research among the homeless, I am perceived as an expert on the homeless in South Florida and they often seek me out.  My work and comments have appeared in newspapers such as the New York Times, The Boston Globe, and The Atlanta Journal.  In Florida, my work has been mentioned in the Orlando Sentinel, Sun Sentinel, and in the Tampa, Tallahassee and Jacksonville papers, as well as other Florida newspapers that write about South Florida's homeless.  The Miami Herald reporters regularly mention my work and quote me when writing stories about the homeless.  Local television and radio news reports also have mentioned my work and have quoted me on numerous occasions.  I have been on numerous local TV talk shows, and many local radio talk shows discussing South Florida's homeless, family issues, and addiction.  In addition, to requests from journalist; other academics, City, County and State authorities often call on me for my data and my assistance in their efforts to help the homeless, and as an expert witness in related court cases.

Past consultant to the Substance Abuse Ministry (SAM) program a component of the Florida Drug-Free Communities Project: Religious Leaders Response to Substance Abuse, Miami, Florida.  Designing and directing Program evaluation both locally and statewide.

Past consultant to the project Drug Awareness Wins Neighbors, (DAWN), Miami, Florida.  Designed and implementing this community prevention and intervention program.

Past consultant for the Miami Coalition for the Homeless, Miami Florida.  Program evaluation consultation and developed a computer network that linked homeless providers to a computer based case management system (1991-1992).

Past consultant for the Dade American Civil Liberties Union related to their suit against the City of Miami for the Cities treatment of the Homeless (1990-1992)

In 1992, a representative for the ACLU on the federal judge's oversight committee related to the City of Miami project to relocate homeless from under I-395.

 Past consultant to the Broward Children's Service Board (BCSB).  Developing a system to evaluate agency services contracted through BCSB.

Past consultant to Concept House a substance abuse program.  Wrote the policy and procedure manual, developed a residential treatment program.  Assisted in their regaining  their state license that they lost because of poor management.

COMPUTER LITERACY

I have been accessing computers and writing programs in my research endeavors since 1977.  Beginning with the IBM card sorter, I have used the Dec. 10, Dec. 20, the VAL 11/780, the Prime, the Harris 60, and the VAC 6310.  I am also very knowledgeable with personal computers, of which I own four.  I have used many different word processors on both mainframe and personal computers.  I have also used modems for telecommunication since 1980. 

Among the statistical packages available to researchers, I have used APL, BMD, SAS, SCSS, and I have used SPSS Release 9, SPSSX and SPSS for Windows extensively.  Among the more familiar computer programs, since 1979 I have used WordPerfect, WordStar, Microsoft Word and many other word processors.  I am familiar with programs such as Lotus 1-2-3, Clipper, dBase IV, Reflex, QutroPro, Access, and Excel.  I have used graphic program and print shop/desk top publishing programs.  I also have experience with networking hardware, software and I have networked a number of non-profit agencies.  I also have designed, developed and wrote software for non-profit social service agencies for case management, reporting and evaluation.

Attended an intensive three-day seminar on Advanced Topics in Statistical Analysis, a seminar offered by SPSS Inc.  It covered such topics as:  Residual Analysis, Multicollinearity, Logistic and Probit Regression, MANOVA Time-Series, Hilogliner, Hierarchical Cluster, and Quick Cluster Analysis, in Washington, DC, October 23-25, 1990.

Developed two major social service Management Information Systems for social service agencies in Florida (Broward Children's Service Board, Ft. Lauderdale and PACE, Inc., Jacksonville, FL.) that was designed for monitoring, tracking, reporting, and research (program evaluation, hypothesis testing, etc).
