I teach graduate and undergraduate courses primarily in personality psychology. Periodically, I also offer courses in the areas of industrial/organizational and developmental.

PSY 2403 Introduction to Theories of Personality

Course Syllabus

This course is intended as a general introduction to personality psychology. The course will expose students to a combination of theory and research in the field of personality psychology. This course will address questions like the following: What is personality? What are the major theories of human personality? What kind of research has been generated by each theory? How do personality psychologists study personality? In what ways do individuals differ in terms of personality characteristics? How are these characteristics related to human behavior? In brief, a variety of personality theories will be introduced and critical evaluation of alternative theories will be encouraged.

PSY 2603 Life-Span Development

Course Syllabus

This course is intended as a general introduction to life-span development. The course will expose students to a combination of theory and research in the field of development al psychology. This course will address questions like the following: What is meant by life-span development? How do developmental psychologists study development across the life-span? What are the major domains investigated in the scientific study of life-span development? What kind of research has each area generated? In brief, Life-Span Development will enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of human development.  

PSY 2910 Exploring Psychology

Course Syllabus

This course will focus on information and issues you will find important for shaping your future career in psychology or other fields. The purpose of this course is to provide information to help you understand the range of options available within the field of psychology and to help you better plan your academic future and, hopefully, your career. During the course of a semester you will explore different sub-areas of psychology, you will learn about graduate school and how one might approach admission to graduate school, and you will explore your specific interests. You will also be involved in a variety of exercises to help you accomplish these goals and to increase your awareness and understanding of your goals as they relate to the field of psychology.

PSY 4403 Advanced Personality

Course Syllabus

This course will be organized around six domains of personality functioning- biological, intrapsychic, dispositional, phenomenological, socio-cultural, and adjustment-adaptive, as presented in Dr. Randy Larsen's and Dr. David Buss' Personality Psychology. Class readings will also include a list of peer-reviewed journal articles. One goal of the course is to build upon the Theories of Personality class and introduce current personality research. Students are expected to review theories covered in the Theories of Personality course (as necessary) prior to the class meeting. Preparatory work is required to enable productive and active discussion of current personality research. Topics may include but not be limited to sex and gender issues, behavioral genetics, cognitive topics, and theoretical and measurement issues in trait psychology. Course objectives will be obtained throughout the semester through readings, various class assignments (including short writing and objective assignments), active class participation, and a research proposal.

PSY 4920 Applied Personality Psychology

Course Syllabus

This course is intended to build upon the Theories of Personality course (see prerequisites), and provide you with a comprehensive understanding of applied personality psychology. You will be exposed to a wide variety of current issues and controversies in the field and critical evaluation will be encouraged. The course will also examine the public policy implications of different theoretical perspectives as outlined in Dr. Lawrence Pervin's Current Controversies and Issues in Personality. Class readings will also include a list of peer-reviewed journal articles. Course objectives will be obtained throughout the semester through readings, various class assignments (including short writing and objective assignments), active class participation, and a research proposal.

PSY 4920 Motivation

Course Syllabus

This course is intended to build upon the previous courses in psychology (see prerequisites), and provide you with a more comprehensive understanding of the psychology of motivation. You will be exposed to a wide variety of topics and critical evaluation will be encouraged. Involvement in the course will foster your abilities to intelligently discuss/critique/debate, in verbal as well as written form, the various issues pertaining to human motivation. These objectives will be obtained throughout the semester through readings, various class assignments (including short writing and objective assignments), active class participation, and a research proposal.

ODYN 5243 Staffing, Selection, and Compensation

Course Syllabus

The intent of this graduate course is to provide you with a basic understanding of the psychology of staffing, selection and compensation in organizations. We will examine basic theoretical and applied psychological processes involved in recruiting, testing and selection, and reward systems.

PSY 6433 Theories of Personality

Course Syllabus

The purpose of this graduate course is to provide you with a graduate-level introduction to personality theory. The course is intended to give you an understanding of personality processes, the basic components of major theories of personality, an evaluation of each of the theories, and the applicability of the theories to empirical study. You will be exposed to a wide variety of personality theories and critical evaluation will be encouraged. Involvement in the course will foster your abilities to intelligently discuss/critique/debate, in verbal as well as written form, the various theories that are encountered throughout the semester. These objectives will be obtained throughout the semester with readings from your text, assigned articles, class assignments, quizzes, active class participation, presentations and short papers.
