PAULA CONLON has been studying indigenous music and dance of North America since the 1980s when she wrote her master's thesis on the Canadian Amerindian flute and its music. Her doctoral dissertation (1993) is an ethnographic study and semiotic analysis of Iglulik Inuit drum-dance songs from northern Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. Since moving to Norman in 1996 to teach at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Conlon has attended and participated in a variety of Native events, and she incorporates this first-hand experience into her publications, presentations, workshops, and classes. Her publications include book chapters, journal articles, and encyclopedia entries on Native American flute, Mvskoke Stomp Dance, and Southern Plains powwow song and dance. At the University of Oklahoma's School of Music and Native American Studies Program, Professor Conlon teaches Native American and world music classes, along with experiential seminars on the Native American flute and its music.
