The Native American flute was an integral part of life in North America for hundreds of years. Traditionally, this instrument was used by a number of tribes as a vehicle for love songs played by a man to court a woman. Each flute was tailor-made to mirror the dimensions of the man’s body, and each song was a personal gift of love, created for that one special listener. By the twentieth century, this style of courtship had faded away, and the flute was in danger of being forgotten with it. Here in Oklahoma, Comanche artist Doc Tate Nevaquaya became interested in the flute, and began learning the old songs in the 1960s. His efforts to research the repertoire and construction of flutes as well as his performances, including the first commercial recordings of the instrument, were the starting point for the regeneration of this instrument.

Today, there is unprecedented interest in the Native American flute across the country and beyond. In the spring of 2002, the Jacobson House Native Art Center in Norman, Oklahoma was host to a series of classes on Native American flute taught by renowned flutists Terry Tsotigh and Edmond Nevaquaya, one of Doc Tate’s sons. Upon the completion of the classes, the members of this original group decided to form Oklahoma’s first Native American flute circle. This group now meets the first Friday evening of each month to play and discuss the Native American flute. The Oklahoma Flute Circle is a member of the International Native American Flute Association (INAFA), whose goal is to foster the preservation, appreciation, and advancement of the Native American flute.
