A study of world music in its cultural context, dealing with such aspects as everyday life, worship and belief, migration, dance, memory, politics and identity. Techniques of aural perception are stressed for the improvement of basic listening skills. Required course for music majors; non-music majors admitted by permission of the department.

An examination of non-Western music in its cultural context, dealing with such aspects as everyday life, worship and belief, migration, dance, memory, politics and identity, with illustrative case studies from a variety of world areas. Native American music of the North American continent, with special emphasis on the Plains area. Cultural context and aesthetic elements of the music will be examined. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

An examination of Native American music in its cultural aesthetic context. Regional studies will include the Eastern Woodlands, Southwest, Southern and Northern Plains, Northwest Coast, and the Arctic. Prerequisite: graduate standing or permission of the department.
