Areas of specialization:  Motivation and cognitive engagement in learning; applied cognitive research; instruction and assessment of reading comprehension; measurement of relationships between motivational and cognitive factors that affect learning; research methodology. 
Current research interests:  How different instructional environments affect the representation of incoming information and perceptions of the environment; how perceptions of democracy, motivation to learn, and cognitive engagement may interact to influence learning.
