Homenaje a Antoine
Haitian Art is amazing. I have just started enjoying it, and want to share some with you. I think the greatest Haitian artist is the late Antoine Oleyant. Here is one of his flags, owned by the Fowler Museum at UCLA . This is a flag for the Iwa Bossou represented by the bull.
Antoine revolutionized vodou flagmaking in a way similar to how Picasso and cubism revolutionized european painting. We are very happy to have four Antoine's. They look a little shiny due to the flash hitting the sequins.
Here's one more Antoine that my friend Tyler owns.
I am thinking about stealing it!!! The flags above and below this text are
flags for the Iwa Danbala represented by twin snakes. (for pictures of some
of Tyler's other excellent flags click

).
While I am not a big fan of typical Haitian naive painting, there are some fantastic Haitian painters. Here's my favorite Haitian painting. The guy in the wedding dress is Baby Doc Duvalier.
