Professor Goode's current research examines the politics of internal borders in explaining the decline of regionalism in Russia. This research utilizes insights from the study of borders in disciplines outside of political science, particularly anthropology, sociology, and political geography. These help to demonstrate the myriad ways that borders are fundamental social and political institutions and to overcome some of the limitations imposed by traditional approaches to federalism, regime transitions, and identity politics in understanding the trajectory of Russian politics since 2000.
