The Bears of Katmai, June 2001

We stayed 4 days at Hallo Bay Camp on the edge of the Katmai National Park.  The park is in the northeast part of the  Alaska Penninsula, more or less across the Shelikoff Straight from Kodiak.  Each day we hiked out with either Fran or Brad in search of grizzlies.  We saw 31 bears in all, some from relatively close range.  We were the only guests in the camp. Most people apparently prefer to come during the salmon runs.  However, we got to see tons of bears and lots of interesting behaviors like, clam digging, sedge eating, beachcombing, and flirting. It is a fantastic experience to see these bears in the wild.   Here are a few pictures.
