Southern Politics
An Encyclopedia

What is the Encyclopedia?

The Encyclopedia of Southern Politics will provide a thorough and entertaining reference work on the politics of America's most politically distinct and electorally important region.  This work will cover not only the significant events and actors of southern politics, but also deal with key institutional, historical, and theoretical concepts that are important to more fully understanding the politics of the South.

The focus of the volume will be the 20th century transformation of Southern politics. Particular topics of the 19th century political experience in the South will also be given substantial treatment, especially as the events of the Reconstruction and Jim Crow Era give shape to the topics and political events of the 20th century. The scope of topics covered will include major political actors in southern politics, significant political events in Southern Politics, unique institutions and practices of the South, political movements and organizations, and major theories of political behavior, institutional organization, and political change that are important to discussions of the politics of the South.

What is the Market?

This work will reach all of the major markets of encyclopedias of Greenwood Press. While some of the intellectual jargon used in the study of Southern Politics is distinct to the professions of history, politics, psychology, and political science, the design of the encyclopedia will allow for the treatment of key concepts and terms that are the jargon of this area of study as entries, in order to facilitate access by the broadest audience. As a research resource, this work will provide sufficient overview to inform the reader, and also provide additional guidance with regard to expert source material, in order to facilitate further research for those who are curious about a topic beyond its treatment in the encyclopedia.

How toContribute an Entry

To contribute an entry, contact the general editor, Keith Gaddie, via telephone, fax, or email.  A list of planned entries can be viewed in the original volume proposal here.  Suggestions for entries that have been overlooked in the creation of the initial entry list are welcome.

Entries will run from 500 words to 10,000 words, depending on the scope and historical or political significance of the entry.  Entries should be typed, double-spaced, and submitted in a conventional word-processing format.  Entries should include complete citations for supporting research or references that were used in constructing the entry, or which might prove useful to users of the encyclopedia.  Supporting graphics, tables, illustrations,  or photographs should be submitted with the manuscript.  Appropriate source credit and permissions should be obtained for any non-original artwork or graphic representations.

Entries will be subject to peer review.

Contributors of 5,000 words or more of material will receive a free copy of the encyclopedia, which will probably retail for $400.00 to $500.00.

Timeline for Publication

The final delivery date for the manuscript is October 2004.  Contributors should submit complete entries and all supporting visuals by December 2003, in order to allow time for copyediting, proofing, and organization of the volume by the editor, and to allow for review of the volume by the advisory board.
