Biographical Sketch

Mazen Y. Kanj received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at The University of Oklahoma in 1995. He has a Masters (Class of 1990) and a Bachelor (Class of 1988) of engineering degrees in Civil Engineering from the American University of Beirut.

Research

Dr. Kanj is a leader to one of the thrust projects for the Rock Mechanics Consortium (RMC). Before 10/99, he worked on investigating the problems of sand production prediction and sand control in wells. As such, he performed heuristic knowledge solicitation, acquisition, representation, and inferencing in the domain of the problematic sand influx into the wellbore during oil/gas production. The resulting hybrid-intelligent-system (SITEX) amalgamated the many AI technologies among themselves and with conventional numerical and analytical methodologies. Currently, Mazen's research is focused on developing a virtual rock testing simulator using the theories of coupled processes in poromechanics. The study involves devising analytical solutions to the cylinder and the hollow-cylinder problems under simulated geomechanical testing conditions and aims at developing the PCORE-3D software.
