sF Ponerinae Platythyrea

Platythrea are rare predators of the litter and canopy and may be termite specialists. Jack Longino's Platythyrea pages include an account from Bill Brown suggesting their speed and potent sting make them memorable. I have only collected pilosula from the litter as a stray. Species are sorted by petiole length.

punctata F. Smith 1858
Low vegetation--Mandible with a basal sulcus that begins at the insertion on the dorsal side and curves obliquely to lateral margin; masticatory margin of mandible edentate; petiole length (dorsal view) less than 0.85mm.
pilosula F. Smith 1858
Low vegetation--Masticatory margin of mandible edentate; petiole length (dorsal view) greater than 0.85mm.
