Venezuelan Cinema:
Venezuelan cinema developed in the 1950s. From the 1950s through the
1960s, Venezuela specialized in documentaries. Only in the 1970s
did the government become involved in the film industry, supporting its
local cinema and discouraging foreign imports. From 1975 to 1980,
Venezuela produced 29 films, all of them supported by the government.
These films won international acclaim. In the 1980s, an economic
recession hurt the Venezuelan cinema industry. In the 1990s, the
state production agency, started to promote again both the quality and
the quantity of loval filmmaking. The National
Film Center (Cinemateca Nacional de
Venezuela) was established. Also, the government sought
other Latin American countries to fund and co-produce films. Still
restricting foreign cinema somewhat, the Venezuelan cinema is recovering
at this point.
