Course
Description:
-
This course covers some of
the most important dramatists and plays of the modern period in Spain.
We will cover Federico García Lorca’s rural tragedies (Bodas
de sangre,
Yerma, and La casa de Bernarda Alba); the
political theater of Buero Vallejo (El tragaluz and Un soñador
para un pueblo); the expressionist theater of Ramón del Valle-Inclán
(Luces de Bohemia); the absurdist (and very funny) theater of Miguel
Mihura (Tres sombreros de copa) and Jardiel Poncela (Eloísa
está debajo de un almendro); and the contemporary realistic
theater of Martín Recuerda (Las salvajes en Puente San Gil
and Las arrecogías del beaterío de Santa María
Egipciaca). Several movies will be shown in class on some of
the plays.
Grading
Practices:
-
Four quarterly evaluations
based on class activities for each of the 4 periods, e.g., a 3 pp. take-home
Spanish compositions on a topic assigned by the instructor (based on readings
done previously in class) and written according to the latest MLA guidelines;
other factors to be considered are attendance, quizzes (if any), individual
class participation, brief (5') impromptu compositions written in class,
and group activities.

Students with disabilities:
Any student in this course who has a disability that may prevent him or
her from fully demonstrating his or her abilities should contact me personally
as soon as possible so we can discuss accomodations necessary to ensure
full participation and facilitate your educational opportunities.
-
Academic misconduct:
Students should be aware that academic misconduct entails severe penalties
and the resentment of honest students. For your information, “Academic
misconduct includes (a) cheating (using unauthorized materials, information,
or study aids in any academic exercise), plagiarism, falsification of records,
unauthorized possession of examinations, intimidation, and any and all
other actions that may improperly effect the evaluation of a student’s
academic performance or achievement; (b) assisting others in any such act;
or (c) attempts to engage in such acts” [Student Code Book, p. 21].
For any such act of misconduct charge must be made. If the charge is proven,
the instructor assigns a predetermined grade penalty (maximum of F) and
the Provost may take disciplinary action as severe as permanent expulsion.
For more detailed information, consult the Student Code Book.
-
“It is the policy of the University
to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and
to provide without penalty for the rescheduling of examinations and additional
required class work that may fall on religious holidays” (The Faculty
