Course Description:
  • This course covers some of the most important dramatists and plays of the modern period in Spain.  We will cover Federico García Lorca’s rural tragedies: Bodas de sangre, Yerma, and La casa de Bernarda Alba; the political theater of Buero Vallejo and Alfonso Sastre; the expressionist theater of Ramón del Valle-Inclán; the absurdist (and very funny) theater of Miguel Mihura and Jardiel Poncela; and the contemporary realistic theater of Martín Recuerda.  Several movies will be shown in class on some of the plays. 


Grading Practices:

  • Four quarterly evaluations based on class activities for each of the 4 periods, e.g., a 3 pp. take-home Spanish compositions on a topic assigned by the instructor (based on readings done previously in class) and written according to MLA guidelines, attendance (1 class missed =A; 2 = B; 3 = C; 4 = D; 5 = F), individual class participation, brief (5') impromptu compositions written in class on material assigned, and group activities.
