Texts:

1. Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de.  El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha.  Ed. Luis Andrés Murillo.  3 vols.  Madrid: Clásicos Castalia.  ISBN: 84-7039-284-0.  Softcover.  This is an excellent annotated edition of this very important work.  The third volume, a bibliography, is a must, especially for graduate students. Those of you who might want to compare the original Spanish version with the best English edition I know, the John Ormsby translation, may consult Cervantes, Miguel de.  Don Quixote.  1885.  Joseph R. Jones & Kenneth Douglas, eds.  A Norton Critical Edition.  New York & London: W. W. Norton, 1981. ISBN: 0-393-09018-3.

Recommended Dictionary:

1. Simon and Schuster's International Dictionary: English/Spanish. Spanish/English.  2nd. Ed.  New York: Macmillan, 1997.  ISBN: 0-02-862013-5.

Course description:
A close reading of Cervantes's masterpiece, Don Quijote.  At least one film version of DQ will be shown in class.

Grading practices:

  • For undergraduate students: four brief (3 pp. long) papers (take-home style) in Spanish on topics relating to Don Quijote
  • For graduate students: Two mid-terms (take-home style) and a final on Don Quijote, and a brief research paper (15-20 pp. long) following MLA standards.  The instructor will provide topics for students to choose from the first day of class.

Addenda:

Students with disabilities:  Any student in this course who has a disability that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating his or her abilities should contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss accomodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate your educational opportunities.
Academic misconduct: Students should be aware that academic misconduct entails severe penalties and the resentment of honest students.  For your information, "Academic misconduct includes (a) cheating (using unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise), plagiarism, falsification of records, unauthorized possession of examinations, intimidation, and any and all other actions that may improperly effect the evaluation of a student's academic performance or achievement; (b) assisting others in any such act; or (c) attempts to engage in such acts." Student Code Book, p. 21.  For any such act of misconduct a charge must be made.  If the charge is proven, the instructor assigns a predetermined grade penalty (maximum of F) and the Provost may take disciplinary action as severe as permanent expulsion.  For more detailed information, consult the Student Code Book.

NB:  Enjoy the adventures of Don Q!
