Texts:
-
Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de. El ingenioso hidalgo
don Quijote de la Mancha. Ed. Luis Andrés Murillo.
3 vols. Madrid: Clásicos Castalia. ISBN: 84-7039-284-0.
Softcover. This is an excellent annotated edition of this very important
work. The third volume, a bibliography, is a must, especially for
graduate students. Those of you who might want to compare the original
Spanish version with the best English edition I know, the John Ormsby translation,
may consult Cervantes, Miguel de. Don Quixote. 1885.
Joseph R. Jones & Kenneth Douglas, eds. A Norton Critical Edition.
New York & London: W. W. Norton, 1981. ISBN: 0-393-09018-3.

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.
7th. ed. New York: The Modern Language Association of America, 2009.

Course description:

A close reading of Miguel de Cervantes's masterpiece,
Don
Quijote. Several cultural representations of Don Quijote
in art, painting, music, ballet, opera, song, film, and musical drama will
be shown in class. Among them, Ludwig Minkus' 1869 Don Quixote
Ballet (Kitri's Wedding), Manuel de Falla's 1923 puppet opera
El
retablo de Maese Pedro, Richard Strauss' 1897 tone poem Don Quixote,
Gordon Lightfoot's 1972 folk song Don Quixote, Grigori Kozintsev's
1957 Soviet drama film Don Kihot, and Arthur Hiller's 1972 musical/film
Man
of La Mancha.
Grading practices:
-
Two brief (5 pp. take-home) papers on topics relating to
DQ

Don Quijote, following
MLA standards (34%).
Addenda:
-
Students with disabilities: Any student in this
course who has a disability that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating
his or her abilities should contact me personally as soon as possible so
we can discuss accomodations necessary to ensure full participation and
facilitate your educational opportunities.
-
Academic misconduct: Students should be aware that
academic misconduct entails severe penalties and the resentment of honest
students. For your information, "Academic misconduct includes (a)
cheating (using unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any
academic exercise, plagiarism, falsification of records, unauthorized possession
of examinations, intimidation, and any and all other actions that may improperly
effect the evaluation of a student's academic performance or achievement;
(b) assisting others in any such act; or (c) attempts to engage in such
acts." Student Code Book, p. 21. For any such act of misconduct a
charge must be made. If the charge is proven, the instructor assigns
a predetermined grade penalty (maximum of F) and the Provost may take disciplinary
action as severe as permanent expulsion. For more detailed information,
consult the Student Code Book.
NB: Enjoy the adventures
of Don Q!
