Course Description:
A study of representative works from the Middle Ages to the Baroque.
Class Goals:
By the end of the semester, the students a) will have been acquainted with the main authors
and texts from the Spanish Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque; b) will be able
to recognize genres (epic, story, lyric, drama), literary movements, and general themes
(from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque); c) will be able to analyze poetic
and prose texts, formally, descriptively, and analytically; d) will have
increased their general
cultural level of early Hispanic civilization, and e) will have developed their critical skills in
the following five areas: thinking (factual and critical), reading (descriptive and analytical),
writing (sequential and logical), listening (specific and conceptual), and speaking (selective
and extensive [dialogue form]).
Grading Practices:
Four quarterly evaluations based on class activities (e.g., quizzes, group work, compositions,
presentations, homework on material read, presente
d, or viewed), attendance (1=A; 2=B; 3=C;
4= D; 5=F), class participation, and other (to be defined according to the needs of the class).

Academic misconduct:  Students should be aware

made. If the charge is proven, the instructor assigns a predetermined grade penalty
(maximum of F) and the Provost may take disciplinary action as severe as permanent
