Did anyone see Turk and Bayanouni?
If Anyone saw the Mustaqbil TV program last night with Riad al-Turk of the Social Syrian Democratic Party and Bayanouni of the Moslem Brotherhood broadcast from London, I would love to get a description of it with your reaction. I missed it. A number of journalists in town would also like to hear public reaction.
Nassim Yaziji has begun a blog, entitled "Middle East Policy," which looks like it should be interesting. Nassim is a Syrian, I believe, who studied political science at the Lebanese University in Beirut and is now living in London. It is worth taking a look at. Nassim says he will, "debate Middle East policy issues, convey Middle Eastern viewpoints, and serve as a bridge among scholars, researchers and politicians of the western and Middle East."
Moderating "Syria Comment".
A number of people have asked me to moderate the comment section of "Syria Comment," in order to censor remarks by those who use abusive language, "scream" constantly, and generally inhibit discussion. I don't want to do this for the obvious reasons. One never knows where to draw the line on censorship. It is a slippery slope and even some of the worst screamers are sometimes interesting and have points worth considering. I would ask, however, that commenters try to be observe basic norms of politeness in order to keep this forum open to those who prefer not to be screamed at. Thanks for broaching the issue of the comments section. I agree with you that we're all for free speech, but what about those who actually threaten others?
I second that. its quiet annoying and i have been part of it. but the alternative is not better.
As long as ssprs and members are not attacked. As long as this serve as a forum for dialog and not attack those with notable family, U.S. based or have you. We will respect all views and respond respectefully. You get out of line, you publish crap that is not true you will hear it from us accordingly. We respect all views, as long as they are said in a discussion form and not published merely as an attack.
We started using this forum recently to evaluate whether to activate publicly the SSPRS website blog and chat area or not, in addition to testing resistant to secular Republican Programs by Syrians and stating our counter-viewpoints. We started here after evaluating the material and blogs published in open forum at Ghadry’s SRP, we determined that it is too time and intellectual waste of time, in addition to the assured harassment to members carried by other parties.
To our surprise, after answering to the secular program resistance, which seemed productive in light of the changes carried by the Moslem Brotherhood, surprisingly, we ran into a more potent resistant to the rule of Older Families and the fear of the Zaaim style of leadership, mostly from Lebanese bloggers.
We will continue to participate in this blog forum for little a awhile as it has proven to be a good lab test. to issues that we did not even foresee that it would be an issue at all.
We have professional team monitoring this site, that are part of the SSPRS intelligence unit, they have decades of profiling experience. We are only interested in the opinion of Syrians people and not those opinion expressed by Lebanese, Syrian-American or Academia be it Syrian or global.
You want respect, start by respecting yourself.

i would also ask for no moderation/screening at all on the part of josh. for one - it's very time consuming. but more importantly, "censorship" is such a delicate issue - most of us have been suffered from it (& if only when we had to "tunnel" in order to access our hotmail accounts from damascus...) & it is one of the main complaints we keep throwing at the regional governments.
in addition - those people who keep using foul language and/or hate speech in this particular "comments section" will only effect everybody else's disdain towards them & thus are not really threat to the conversation amongst the rest of us.

i think that at this time, for those of us who are in the "media" field (blogs etc.) to establish networks of information & exchange. one of the biggest traps to fall into is to perceive each other on the basis of ethno-religious identities - if you want to see how bad it can get, have a look at lebanon...
it shouldn't matter which religion people belong to, or what language they speak, or where they were born (or, for that matter, where they live) - we should judge each other by our actions & conduct. thus, i don't care if you're sunni, shi'a, alawi, christian, jewish, baha'i, yazidi, non-religious or whatever. i don't care if your "mother tongue" is arabic, kurdish, hebrew, turkish, persian, english, french or swedish. i don't care if you live in damascus or aleppo, in beirut or amman or cairo, in den haag or tel aviv or london or new york. or in southern california...

I'm an American idiot. But I see Syria in an impossible position. It has no resources to sell. And America has no real understanding of the Arab world. And the Israeli pressure to keep Syria weak for decades can't be ignored.
I would love to snap my fingers and have Syria a happy thriving democracy tomorrow, but that is not going to happen. There are so many factors that build a democracy, that pinning it on one person is laughable.
But I also understand that there are a lot of smart people trying to figure out what direction Syria (and Lebanon) should take. Democracy is great, but has its faults. I actually think some Arab leaders are trying to figure out what is good, what is bad, and provide proper leadership.
