Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi and his two books Creativity and Flow.
Most who know me are aware of my interest in the writings of the former University of Chicago psychology professor Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, especially since almost all musicians have experienced flow many times through their own practice, teaching, and/or performing. Take a look also at his book Creativity as a resource for steps to turn one’s life into a more creative and fulfilling journey and avoiding such pitfalls as meaningless repetition of various occurrences in our lives. His illuminating list of questions for the interviews of highly creative persons for his book appears in an appendix.

You may or may not be aware that a video tape has been produced to accompany his book wherein he describes and demonstrates places of balance in the body as well as other principles. It is available through GIA Publications.

Many teachers are talking about this helpful book devoted primarily to helping students know how to practice. The premise is certainly central to my way of thinking – that of the importance of teaching our students how to practice. This can be extremely helpful to those who teach private piano lessons.
