Julie Elizabeth Miller-Cribbs, MSW, Ph.D.

Julie Miller-Cribbs, MSW, PhD is currently an Associate Professor and the Assistant Director of the School of Social Work at the University of Oklahoma – Tulsa.  Dr. Miller-Cribbs has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Colorado College, a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago and received her Ph.D. from Washington University George Warren Brown School of Social Work. Before joining the faculty at the University of Oklahoma, she was a professor at the University of South Carolina.  Prior to her academic career, Dr. Miller-Cribbs worked for seven years as an Emergency Room Social Worker at a Level-One trauma facility in St. Louis (Barnes-Jewish Hospital) and worked with urban families and youth at social service agencies in Chicago and St. Louis. 

Her research interests include urban and rural poverty, welfare reform, health care disparities, and the use of social and human capital by individuals in poverty. Recent funded research projects include Social Work Practice with Native American Elders:  Sustainable Content for Cultural Responsiveness in the Advanced Year of the MSW Direct Practice Curriculum and the Bedlam @5 Evaluation Project. Prior projects have included funding from the Lois and Samuel Silberman Fund Faculty Awards Program, the University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research, the Research & Productive Scholarship Award (University of South Carolina), and the Dean’s Research Award (College of Social Work). Her publications have appeared in various journals, she has authored educational material utilized in textbooks and course outlines related to cultural diversity, and she is the author of three books. She has presented her research at over 30 national and international conferences.

Dr. Miller-Cribbs has taught at both the MSW and doctoral level primarily in the areas of Social Welfare Policy, Health Policy, Advanced Social Work Practice and Research. She has received awards for her teaching including ‘Educator of the Year’ at the University of South Carolina. She has served as chair or member on 10 dissertation committees and supervised Honors students and students in the South Carolina Consortium for Cardiovascular Diseases Undergraduate Summer Research Internship Program. 

She is a member of numerous professional societies, including Society for Social Work Research, National Association of Social Workers, Council on Social Work Education, and Influencing State Policy. She has chaired the National Policy Conference twice and chaired the 14th Inter-University Consortium for Social Development (ICSD) Symposium in Recife, Brazil. She is currently the VP for Planning and Operations for ICSD and is a National Board Member of ISP. She continues to review articles for Journal of Social Service Research. She has reviewed nominations for the Outstanding Dissertation Award for the Society for Social Work Research, judged the annual ‘Influencing State Policy’ contest, reviewed abstracts for the Council on Social Work Education, Policy Conference, Technology Conference, National Policy Conference, and ICSD. She also dedicates time to local community agencies by serving as a board member or volunteer work. 

A Tulsa native, Dr. Miller-Cribbs is pleased to return to Tulsa where most of her extended family resides. She lives with her husband Harry who is a teacher at Sapulpa High School and her two children Carly (10) and Cole (6).
