Nelson Diversity Surveys
This site provides results of and information about our diversity surveys, which determined demographics of tenured / tenure track faculty at pertinent departments of "top" universities, ranked by NSF (National Science Foundation) according to research expenditures in that discipline.  The FY2002 data were the first published, disaggregated by gender, by race, and by rank, on faculty at the top 50 research universities in each of 14 science and engineering disciplines.  Our FY2005 survey was expanded to include the "top 100" departments in each of 15 disciplines; in some cases, slightly fewer than 100 schools were ranked by NSF for a discipline.  These surveys were conducted under the auspices of the University of Oklahoma and the Diversity in Science Association.  Data were collected by surveying department chairs; each department chair provided faculty data, disaggregated by gender, by race/ethnicity, and by rank.  All data collected for the Nelson Diversity Surveys were collected under the auspices of the University of Oklahoma and with prior approval from the OU Internal Review Board.

Table showing faculty of the "top 50" chemistry departments (same as above), except OMITTING BIOCHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL BIOLOGY division faculty in those departments which have specified that they are joint departments.  Biochemistry and chemical biology are biological sciences.  Congress has recently indicated that biological sciences no longer warrant special funds in some situations, because females are overrepresented at the undergraduate level in these sciences.  In addition, females are represented in greater proportion in biological sciences than in chemistry.  Therefore, including biochemistry and chemical biology inflates the representation of females in chemistry.  Comparing this table to the one directly above indicates that removing these biological science divisions does reduce the representation of females.
