fall 2009: welcome back for a new semester! I'm up and blogging, in connection with my science and popular culture class -- the site is called "petri dish: labnotes on science, culture & history." It will be part of the scipop webfolio -- the first pages are going up now with more to follow over the course of the semester. For more on history of science in the digital age, see a recent address I gave for a plenary session on "The Public Presentation of Science and Technology" at the joint meeting of the History of Science Society and the Society for the History of Technology: "'What have we to do with Mr. Everyman, or he with us?': Reflections on Professionalism, the Public, and the Digital Age." For a minute of fun, take a peek at The Gettysburg Address PowerPoint Presentation. I still crack up every time I look at it :-) . . . and for something more awe-inspiring, check out what my students in a former class on the history of modern science had to say after they went out at night to look at the stars to see what thoughts occurred to them -- the list I put together includes excerpts from each report. It's really fascinating stuff! You might want to take a break from studying and try it yourself (someplace safe of course!). If so, I'd love to hear what your responses were, too.
new
teaching stuff: I'm teaching our new freshman
course, which will sample the history of science, medicine, technology, and
views of nature: take a look, and feel free to send feedback! "Science,
Nature, and Society" (hsci 1003). |

That's it for now .
