ACTIVISM

Doing participatory video with Chicano/a kids in San Antonio, Texas.

I strongly believe in the concept of PRAXIS, whereby theory and research should inform political action and vice-versa. For this reason I have become involved with several community organizations where my research and knowledge can assist tangible policies and actions.

I am involved as an advisor with three women's organizations in different Latin American countries. In Honduras I work with the Centro de Derechos de Mujeres (CDM), one of the few feminist organizations in that country. In Nicaragua I assist Puntos de Encuentro, the major non-profit organization for women and youth in the country, and in Ecuador I work with the Coordinadora Nacional de Mujeres, an organization currently leading the women's movement in that country. I serve as the main communication consultant for these organizations' work in designing and implementing national media campaigns, and also in their attempts to raise awareness among media professionals on the negative ways in which the media portray women and gender.

For six years I was involved with San Anto Cultural Arts, in San Antonio, Texas. San Anto is a private non-profit organization located on the west side of San Antonio and serves the residents in and around the Alazan-Apache housing project. The purpose of San Anto Cultural Arts is to nurture and cultivate the artistic talents of children, teenagers, and adults in this community. We believe that people should have the ability to record their history, culture, and heritage through their own words and vision. We also believe that individuals who have a certain talent in the arts should have the opportunity to realize this talent regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic class. Furthermore, in the line of the famous Brazilian pedagogue Paulo Freire, we believe in the ability of art and culture to empower people.

At the University of Oklahoma I have recently become the Faculty Advisor for The Undercurrent, a student newspaper.

More recently I have started exploring the Internet as a tool for "cyberactivism." See Day of the Dead Altar Page for a case in point.
