Latinos and Media
Rebecca and her poster on
Latino theatre in San Antonio
Course Description
Latinos and the Media/Latinos and their Media is a
course designed to explore three different aspects of relevance to understand
the relationship between Latino communities in the U.S. and the mass media.
First, the course will focus on how the mainstream media has represented
Latinos/as and Latino culture; we will survey Latino representations in
Hollywood films, on television, in the press, and in advertisements. Second,
the course will move to the history and development of Spanish-language
media in the U.S.; here we will explore issues of institutional development,
markets, and personalities behind well known media corporations such as
Univision, Telemundo, Spanish-language radio networks, etc.. Finally, we
will center on Latinos/as as media audiences both as a multimillion dollar
market, and as a very unique cultural phenomenon in this country.
