The Cat and the Baby's Soul
By Cristina Mejia

Author's Note: This story is one of the more famous myths about cats. Many of you will have heard some type of version of it before. Have you ever watched Stephen King’s Cat’s Eyes? I combined several of these stories into one to make it a little different. Usually, the cat sucks out the baby’s breath; I made it her soul. The humans also had their own belief about the cat.s eyes… When I saw this picture of the cat, I really was mesmerized by its eyes.

This story takes place the next day after the kittens arrive. It will take place outside later on in the afternoon. It will be told from the Grandpa Cat's view once again. The four kittens will also be involved with the story telling just like the first story. Enjoy!

“Are you ready?” Grandpa Cat questioned.

“Yeah!” the four little kittens exclaimed.

“Okay. Pay attention. This is one of the most famous tales of a cat and a new baby. This mysterious white cat named Zoe had the most amazing eyes any human would ever see. These mysterious eyes are what also would lead her into harm,” Grandpa concluded.

Grandpa started again, “It was a dark rainy afternoon. The newborn had only arrived a few weeks ago. Zoe, the cat of the house, was happy to have a new companion. Hopefully this little one would help protect her from the evil dog. Also, this small little human was someone that she could now cuddle with and watch over as her own. The humans were proud of this new bundle of joy as well. However, what Zoe didn’t know is that the humans would soon be against her.”

“Grandpa, why would they want to do that?” questioned Mona.

“Sssshhhhh,” Jonnie hissed.

“Just listen. By now it was getting late. As the woman rocked the baby to sleep, the sweet little Zoe went upstairs and starting making a place for herself to sleep. After a while, the woman came in and placed the infant in its crib,” Grandpa said.

“Was the cat in the bed with the baby?” Tophers pondered.

“Let him finish will ya?!” Frankie yelled.

“Settle down!” Grandpa said, intervening. “You kittens sure are riled up today. Anyhow, after the humans had gone to bed, the cat heard a strange sound. The little infant was fussing at something. Zoe slowly rose from her nice warm spot on the wooden rocking chair in the corner. She was careful not to awaken the nearby sleeping dog that was sprawled out on the rug."

“What happened next?” young Tophers asked.

“Poor concerned Zoe crept up to the crib. She lightly jumped into the crib to see what the infant was fussing about. The infant just seemed to have some problems breathing,” Grandpa explained.

“Zoe kept expecting the humans to come into the room at any time. A few minutes passed, then a few more. Zoe soon came to realize that the humans weren’t going to wake up. She decided she would watch over the infant until morning,” Grandpa continued.

“Soon, the little infant awoke. Her breathing seemed to be really shallow. However, she lay there, gazing into the eyes of beautiful Zoe. It’s all that the infant could to do to take her eyes off of her. Zoe knew something was wrong. She knew she needed to wake the humans to help this poor child, but Zoe couldn’t leave her. If she were to leave the infant girl alone, she might get scared. What was she to do?” Grandpa proclaimed.

“What did she do? What did she do?” Jonnie asked anxiously.

Grandpa continued, “Zoe lay next to the infant. She decided that she didn’t want to leave her alone. Zoe couldn’t take her eyes off of her. The little girl seemed to be mesmerized by Zoe. Suddenly, the infant stopped breathing. Zoe stayed there with her until the next morning when the humans arrived.“

Then the Grandpa said, “Early the next morning, when the humans entered the room, Zoe took off in a hurry. She almost tripped the woman as she ran between her feet, trying to leave the room. The woman went to check on her baby. She then turned to Zoe because of what she had seen. The little girl’s eyes had turned from a dark brown to a blue-green.”

“See, the humans thought that sweet Zoe had sucked the soul out of their precious daughter. It is said when humans lose their soul, you can see the last thing they saw in their eyes. Since Zoe has such distinctive eyes, they blamed it on her.“

“But Grandpa, don’t they know the truth now?” Frankie asked.

“See, the thing is, Frank-tate, humans believe what they want to believe. Since they don’t speak Meowish all that well, Zoe was never able to explain what had happened,” Grandpa explained.

“What did really happen?” Mona questioned.

Grandpa answered, “Well, as it turns out, the poor infant was sick. Since Zoe wasn’t able to tell the humans the truth, she just went about her way. Some humans still say her sprit still travels around the world, stealing the soul of sick infants.”

“Wow, Grandpa,” Tophers said, “that was a great story. Do you think you can tell us another?”

“Well, I think we will have to wait until tomorrow for it is getting to be late. For tomorrow’s story, what if we talk about The Vampire Cat?
