Dr. Rager's current research is centered on self-directed
learning. Her study of the independent learning experiences of women who have
been diagnosed with breast cancer has resulted in five publications in leading
adult education journals, including the highly competitive Adult and Higher Education
Quarterly, Educational Researcher and the International Journal of Lifelong Education.
In nominating Dr. Rager for this award, one colleague succinctly noted that she
was "the definition of the emergent scholar" and that her research "is
making an impact nationally."

Kansas State University
December 2002
The Kansas State University Alumni Fellows Program, sponsored by the Deans'
Council, the President's Office and the Alumni Association, recognizes
alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers. Since 1983,
the program has brought successful alumni to campus to meet with students
and faculty and share their expertise in the classroom and at informal
settings. Fellows are chosen to return as distinguished guests and as mentors,
friends and counselors. They are honored in recognition of the ultimate
measure of a university - not curricula, facilities or programs, but the
quality of its alumni.

This award provided a summer stipend that enabled me to focus my attention
on the development and pilot testing of a survey instrument regarding the

a progression in my investigation of self-directed learning in a crisis
situation and will result in the seeking of external funding.
