COMM 2003, Communication in Nonwestern Cultures
The purpose of this course is to learn about communication in places that are less familiar to us, namely the "other" parts of the world which we call the "Nonwest." Our first objective is to look at the varieties of languages and cultures across the world, see how they lead to different patterns of communication, learn how they are dynamically created and conserved, and understand how they affect each of us as individuals. Second, we will consider the myths and rituals of different cultures, consider how they impact our individual and collective behaviors, and consider the degree to which these myths and rituals unite as well as divide us. Finally, we will see how languages, cultures, myths, and rituals are played out in one nonwesterner's journey.
