Property rights and the environment
My current research focus is the conflict between private property rights and environmental regulation. I have written several papers examining whether land-use regulations designed to protect the environment are "takings", requiring compensation, or instead instances of the government acting to prevent private parties from doing harm to others.

Rousseau and the Political Philosophy of Culture
In addition, I have a strong interest in the role culture plays in political life. I have studied that question in a book and several papers on Rousseau.
