Abu Bakr (caliph 632-634)

One of the earliest converts to Islam, and the father of the Prophet Muhammad's favorite wife `Aisha.  Following the Prophet's death, he was selected by a consultation of community leaders to be the first caliph.  He led the "wars of apostacy" to subdue those Arabian tribes that had dropped their commitment to Islam (and their payment of taxes) when Muhammad died.
