The longtime name of the larger group of the two groups that originated in the Nation of Islam. It moved toward Sunni orthodoxy under the leadership of Warith Deen Muhammad, who resigned from its leadership on 8/31/03. Its name has changed several times; it is now called the American Society of Muslims (sometimes also the American Muslim Society.)
