Every possible human act has one of five legal values:
Obligatory (wajib)
Recommended (mandub)
Permitted (mubah; also halal)
Disapproved (makruh)
Proscribed (mahzur; also haram)
It is the business of fiqh (legal science) to ascertain these values.
