`isma (protection from sin)

The doctrine that prophets (and for the Shi`ites the Imams as well) are preserved or protected from certain errors and/or sins.

This doctrine was developed and gained wide acceptance from the 2nd/8th century on. Scholars disagreed over whether prophets had this protection throughout their lives or only once their prophetic missions began, and whether the protection applied to only grave sins, or also to minor sins and even error.
