The art of reciting the Qur'an according to prescribed rules, which nevertheless
allow considerable room for expressive variation. Rules govern intonation,
pauses, contractions, and the exact pronunciation of each letter in all possible
contexts.
There are several forms of tajwid:
Tartil (murattal) is a slow, precise recitation.
Hadr is a rapid recitation, which may be used for practice and memory drill.
Tadwir is a medium recitation.
A more emotive, melodic style is called mujawwad (from the word tajwid).
