The zahir is the outside, and the batin the inside, of something. In Islamic discourse, particularly among Sufis and some Shi`ites, rituals and texts have both zahir and batin dimensions. A ritual has an outward form and an inner meaning. The zahir of a text is its apparent meaning; its batin is an esoteric or hidden meaning.
