Isaac's second son (the other being Esau), with whom Jews hold that God continued
his covenant. He was renamed Israel, and was the father of twelve sons who are
more or less identified with the twelve tribes of Israel. At the end of his life
he moved to Egypt, where his descendants later were enslaved until their exodus
under Moses.
