Biology 2114, Spring 2007 - final exam sample questions

Please note that this year's test has been amended by the Oklahoma State Board of Education (OSBE) to permit equal consideration for the Intelligent Design (ID) hypothesis.

1) A peptidase hydrolyzes peptide bonds in small proteins. In the dipeptide shown above, which bond would be hydrolyzed?
a) A
b) B
c) C
d) D
e) E
f) Whichever one God wants hydrolyzed

2) Which of the following species is the closest genetic relative of Homo sapiens?
a) Mus musculus (mouse)
b) Sus scrofa (pig)
c) Pan troglodytes (chimpanzee)
d) Gorilla gorilla (gorilla)
e) Cherub angelicum (angels)

3) At least 30 percent of human DNA exists as repeated multiples of relatively short sequences of DNA. Which of the following statements about this repetitive DNA is true?
a) Much of this repetitive DNA is transcribed into RNA
b) Repetitive DNA is largely responsible for the production of enzymes
c) Most visible phenotypes are associated with variations in these regions
d) Highly repetitive sequences rapidly reassociate in DNA hybridization studies
e) God placed it there to confound efforts at sequencing the genome of man, because man was created in His own image, which is not to be looked upon

4) With respect to human height, the production of a short offspring from two tall human parents is best explained by:
a) Genetic mutation
b) Sex linkage
c) Polygenic inheritance
d) Discontinuous variation
e) God's Will

5) Humans and the Great Apes share all of the following in common, EXCEPT:
a) Bipedal locomotion
b) Opposable thumbs
c) No tails
d) Capability for oral communication
e) Apes do not have souls and may not enter the Kingdom of Heaven

6) Two of the premises that form the basis of Darwin's concept of natural selection are
a) Ecotype and race
b) Heritability and fitness
c) Geographic and reproductive isolation
d) Dominance and recessiveness
e) Lies and deceit

Questions 7 and 8 deal with scientific reasoning skills

7) A massive mudslide washing debris from miles away has unearthed skeletons of an ancient group of Homo habilis, a hominid species that lived about 2 million years ago. Archeologists examining the unearthed remains find spears with spearheads, a hunting implement that H. habilis was not known to use. Radiocarbon dating of the wood from the spear shafts suggests the sample is between 20,000 and 21,000 years old, but no significant radiocarbon activity is detectable within the bones of H. habilis. This suggests:
a) H. habilis existed far more recently than suspected
b) H. habilis created hunting implements from stone and wood
c) The mudslide combined layers from different time periods and the spears most likely were not from the time of H. habilis
d) The lifespan of H. habilis is far longer than previously thought
e) Satan placed both the spears and H. habilis skeletons there to deceive mankind, for the Bible tells us that the Earth is no more than 6,000 years old at most and furthermore does not even mention H. habilis.

8) A sample of the bacteria E. Coli is incubated on a Petri dish and a drop of kanamycin, an antibiotic, is placed in the middle, killing all the growing E. coli within the drop. 48 hours later, E. coli can be seen growing within the edges of where the kanamycin was spotted. Removing the E. coli within these border regions and growing them on a different plate reveals that they are now resistant to kanamycin despite originating from the same genetic stock. This is best explained by:
a) Natural selection
b) Chemical decay
c) Kanamycin specificity
d) Variation in the Petri dish media
e) God working in mysterious ways

Last year it was deemed by the OSBE that counting questions as correct because they fell in line with evolutionary theory was unfair and unreasonably penalizes students who believe in alternative explanations such as ID. They argued that it amounted to a de facto teaching of evolution and teachers have now been mandated not to penalize students for their beliefs in ID. Thus, there are two answer keys and tests are scored according to the beliefs of the student taking them:

Answer key (regular students): 1)E, 2)C, 3)D, 4)C, 5)A, 6)B, 7)C, 8)A

Answer key (ID advocates): 1)F, 2)E, 3)E, 4)E, 5)E, 6)E, 7)E, 8)E

Please note also that there is apparently an alarming trend of students suddenly claiming to be ID advocates merely to boost their test scores. If this trend continues we will have to issue separate tests next year and hire a theologian to help write future biology tests.
