TRAVEL OU is located in Norman, Oklahoma, which is directly south of Oklahoma City on highway I-35. Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City is a 40-minute drive from our campus. Airport Express shuttle service (405-681-3311; toll-free 877-688-3311) can transport you from the airport to Norman for $13-$36 depending on the number of people traveling on the same van. By car, Norman can be reached most easily from highway I-35. We are just south of Oklahoma City and 2 1/2 hours north of Dallas/Fort Worth. Interstate highways I-40 and I-44 are also nearby, providing access to this part of the state from the southwest, west, northeast, and east. HOUSING (PLEASE NOTE that because of increased demand for rooms organizers have made arrangements with several more hotels for reduced-rate rooms, as listed in the descriptions below--March 14, 2007) The main source of housing for the meeting is the Sooner Hotel on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. These rooms can be reserved on the hotel's website--please indicate that you are coming for the Indigenous Studies meeting to receive the reduced rate. This university-run facility has hotel-style rooms (NEARLY sold out in the middle of March), multiple-bedroom bungalows (SOLD OUT in February), and apartment-style suites available at reasonable prices (ranging from $48/double to $119/quad suite per night). All of these rooms feature many standard conference hotel amenities, but the most attractive rooms (the bungalows) are no longer available. The most plentiful rooms (the hotel-style doubles) may seem somewhat dormitory-like to some (especially those who attend a lot of academic conferences) but have the benefit of being convenient. They are nearly gone as of March 14. The apartment-style rooms are in another location about half a mile further from our meeting rooms than the other hotel rooms, but are becoming an attractive option given their proximity to meeting sessions. Meeting organizers will be arranging a limited shuttle service between all Sooner Hotel locations and the meeting rooms on campus. The committee has also reserved reduced-rate rooms ($104 for suite with one Queen) at a nearby Residence Inn, approximately 4 miles from campus. These are very nice rooms with kitchens and lots of workspace, but the hotel is not very close to local businesses. Shuttles will pick up and drop off at the Residence Inn on a limited basis, though some people who stay there may wish to have a car available for local transportation. These rooms may be reserved by contacting the hotel through their website--again, please indicate that you are coming for the Indigenous Studies meeting to receive the reduced rate. As of the middle of March, we have made arrangements with several other hotels in Norman to provide registrants with reduced-rate rooms in hopes of accommodating the large number of people planning on attending this meeting. Though the host committee may be able to extend shuttle service to Sooner Legends Inn & Suites, the other hotels are too far for us to practicably do so. Sooner Legends Inn & Suites, thus, is a very good option and is about four miles from campus. Book by April 18 for the Indigenous Studies meeting and their very nice rooms are only $79 per night. This hotel is close to lots of businesses, and has a restaurant/bar on-site. An inexpensive option ($50-56 per night) near campus is the Thunderbird Lodge (405-329-6990; 800-432-2473), but many participants may prefer more recently updated facilities. LaQuinta ($85 per night) and Fairfield Inn ($95 per night) are also providing reduced rate rooms. Again, specify that you are coming for the Indigenous Studies meeting. Those who prefer a full-service hotel might consider the Holiday Inn-Norman, which is approximately seven miles from campus. Please let us know if you have problems making arrangements at any of these hotels so we can best serve the needs of others who are coming for the meeting.
