This eleventh RFP intends to award one or more
research grants ... each for a maximum of $50,000 ... in May 2001 for
applied,
field-based research projects examining the following
topics with the objective of uncovering effective (and, forecasting future)
practices and behaviors relevant to the management and use of information
technology to achieve business objectives:
Devising Governance Arrangements for Interorganizational Alliances. IT initiatives are increasingly being carried out not by a
single organization but rather through multi-organizational collaborations. Such alliances arise in many different activities, including: the
creation and offering of innovative technology-enabled products or services; the formation and operation of electronic-marketplaces;
and, the development and dissemination of industry infrastructures and standards. Research proposals are sought that produce
sufficient insight and learning to provide guidance to CIOs regarding the various strategies for governance and their effectiveness for
such interorganizational alliances and the advantages and disadvantages of specific governance arrangements given salient contingencies.
Reconceptualizing and Restructuing the CIO Role. The executive role served by a firm's senior information technology executive,
popularly referred to as the chief information officer (CIO), has become complex and all encompassing. Research proposals are
sought which produce insight and learning regarding innovative strategies that sitting CIOs might utilize in increasing both their and their
organizations' effectiveness. Successful proposals are likely to investigate the demands on and the nature of the CIO role today as well
as personal, structural and (possibly) technical approaches for enhancing an incumbent's performance as well as grooming successors.
