An Egyptian scholar of the Shafi`ite school of law who wrote treatises on law (fiqh) and legal theory (usul al-fiqh), including a famous commentary on al-Juwayni's short manual of legal theory, Kitab al-Waraqat. He also wrote a partial Qur'an commentary (tafsir) covering sura 1 and suras 18-114, which his student Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti completed to form the famous "Commentary of the Two Jalals."
