"Unveiling Iraq's Teenage Prostitutes in Syria," by Phillips

Unveiling Iraq's teenage prostitutes
Fleeing their war-torn homes, Iraqi girls are selling their bodies in Syria to support their families.

DAMASCUS, Syria -- You might not even notice the Manara nightclub if it weren't for the gradual flow of cars leading right to it. Just behind the Mosque of President Hafez Assad, the club's parking lot is crammed with cars, many bearing plates from neighboring gulf states. Inside, disco lights pierce the smoky air.

Patrons pack the seats as they sip beer and lazily gaze at the dance floor. They watch teenage girls dressed in snug, revealing clothes awkwardly shuffling to thumping Arabic music. Many girls wear stilettos so steep they can barely walk. Some dance in pairs, often tightly pressed together, fingers entwined. Most seem bored and some, noticeably, are uneasy.

Male customers summon waitstaff to inquire about the availability and age of select girls. A Syrian journalist and I, posing as patrons, consult the staff ourselves. Farah, a 15-year-old, is brought to our table, dressed in camouflage pants and heavy makeup.

Farah sits, swings her long dark hair, shakes hands all around, then pointedly asks, "Who am I speaking to?" I'm taken aback by her businesslike tone and point to the Syrian reporter. Farah pleasantly chats with him, negotiating how much time she'll share, and if a "next step" will be taken. Farah locks eyes with the waiter, nods, and a bottle of champagne is brought to our table. "That'll be 7,000 Syrian pounds," says the waiter. That's $140. The champagne signals the beginning of the process. Conversation is next, and "anything else" will cost more.

As we empty our bottle of champagne, Farah tells us her story.
Like most of the girls at the Manara disco, she is an Iraqi, a Sunni from Fallujah, one of Iraq's most war-torn areas. She got married in the United Arab Emirates, divorced four months afterward, and found work at the disco through a cousin. She says she's working "just to make some money for my family," who also now live in Syria. Farah says she's the family's breadwinner.

The story of a Sunni girl from Fallujah selling herself in a Damascus nightclub represents startling new fallout from the Iraq war, one human rights organizations and experts are only beginning to address. An increasing number of young Iraqi women and girls who fled Iraq during the turmoil are turning to prostitution in Syria, although there are no reliable statistics on how many girls are involved.

That might partly explain why so little reporting has been done on the topic. For journalists and human rights workers, securing contact with Iraqi sex workers in Syria is difficult and dangerous because the topic is taboo.

"It's a serious problem because there are young girls doing this -- 11, 12, 13 years old," says Abdelhamid El Ouali, the representative for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees who's based in Damascus. "It's amazing at first. But when you fight for your life, what are you going to do?"

The Syrian government and UNHCR put the number of Iraqi refugees in Syria at roughly 700,000. Syrian police either lack data or won't release any figures on prostitution, which isn't surprising considering the closed government. The U.S. State Department's 2005 "Trafficking in Persons Report" acknowledges the problem, but officials have no clear sense of its magnitude. According to the report, "There have been some reports that indicate Iraqi women may be subjected to sexual exploitation in prostitution in Syria at the hands of Iraqi criminal networks, but those reports have not been confirmed."

Of course, nearly every conflict breeds prostitution. Despair leads to desperation, which can often lead to sex work. Whether Iraqi girls have actually been "trafficked" is hard to determine for myriad reasons, not the least of which is that coercion is difficult to gauge. "You could say this situation isn't triggered by trafficking -- trafficking just takes advantage of the situation," El Ouali says.

That Iraqi girls and women are selling sex may not seem shocking, but prostitution is especially taboo for Arab women.

"In this culture, to allow your daughter to become a prostitute means you've hit dirt bottom," says Joshua Landis, an American professor from the University of Oklahoma, presently living in Syria. "None of your sisters can get married if it's known that one of them is a prostitute. If there's any public knowledge of this, it's a shame on the whole family." The shame can even lead to "honor killings," in which women are slain by their husbands or relatives for tainting the family name.

Hustling has a particularly violent legacy in Iraq. In 2000, Saddam Hussein publicly executed 200 women convicted of prostitution. Prostitution would be especially shameful in Farah's hometown, as Fallujah is considered one of Iraq's more tribal, religiously conservative cities. "Yes, even Sunnis from Fallujah are doing this kind of work, and it reflects the drama of the situation," El Ouali says. "It's provoked by misery and precariousness."

Syria has traditionally allowed relaxed entry to its Arab neighbors. Many arrived because of rampant, indiscriminate violence back home, while others, like thousands of Iraqi Christians, had been targeted by opposing ethnic or religious sects. Some feared they were "marked" for working with foreigners, mainly Americans, either in the Coalition Provisional Authority or the military, as translators or interrogators.

But with the exception of Palestinians, refugees are not officially allowed to hold jobs in Syria. For the most part, Iraqi refugees are living off their savings, which are drained by daily expenses. Many are stuck in Syria, as few Western embassies are now granting visas, claiming that Iraq has become a liberated country following the fall of Saddam. With economic conditions worsening all the time for refugees, officials say, it's no surprise that Syria is seeing a rise in child exploitation and prostitution.

Koumay Mulhem, a young Syrian journalist, has been researching Iraqi prostitution in Syria for a year as a reporter for an online women's magazine, and is preparing to make a documentary about it. Mulhem serves as my tour guide of sorts one recent Friday night as I try to get a sense of how widespread Iraqi prostitution is here.

Our first stop is Martyrs' Square, the center of Damascus. With theDamascene charm of Middle Eastern nut and juice shops, Al-Merjeh, asit is locally known, is somewhat reminiscent of New York's Times Square of the 1980s: seedy side streets, a plethora of one-star hotels, and pimps. Within minutes, Mulhem locates a pimp, a shoeshine boy, and quickly begins bartering with him.

"I have farfourd," says the pimp, using the slang for very young girls. "Fifteen years old."

"I need younger," Mulhem says.

"Yes, we can find them. Iraqi girls. The cleanest you can find. You'll never see anything like these girls. They'll make you very happy."

"How much?"

"Since you're more than one -- 1,500 Syrian pounds [$30]."

Mulhem balks. The demonstration is over, and so he breaks the deal and walks away. "Two minutes," he says, a terse commentary on how easy it was to transact a deal.

Mulhem says that Al-Merjeh has long been a place to find pimps, even before the influx of Iraqis. It's a transit point for taxi drivers, who transport men to prostitutes in suburban apartments in Jeramana, Berze and Sayeda Zainab (these districts house many Iraqi Christians, Kurds and Shiites, respectively). "Prostitution is flourishing in these areas," Mulhem says. "I'm a resident of Jeramana and there's a new place for prostitution within my own building."

He notes that Russian and Moroccan sex workers operated in Syria during the mid-1990s. A comparatively smaller influx of Iraqi prostitution came after Operation Desert Storm, but "since the last Gulf War, there has been a flood that everybody has felt."

At the square we hop into a taxi. Just after we state our destination, the cab driver begins soliciting us. He tells us about girls in "furnished apartments" in the suburbs and offers us a room "with a 16 year-old maid. You will see something you'll never believe," he says.

We decline and head to Rabwah, a neighborhood with about 20 clubs -- mostly with Syrian and Moroccan sex workers, but now with more Iraqis, Mulhem says. Before entering one, Mulhem pulls me aside. "These places are dangerous," he says. "Don't speak English. You're Turkish now, OK?" An American presence would arouse too much suspicion, he says, as locals are the expected patrons.

In one club, girls in low-cut halter tops walk hand in hand along a fashion runway-like platform. Blaring music makes conversation impossible and so we decide to leave. As we do, a man joins us to help us find "the right club." We hail a cab and head to the upscale neighborhood Mezza. We end up at the Manara nightclub, where I met Farah weeks ago. This is the place, our companion says, where the best Iraqi girls are found, and their youth is a premium.

This time the girls are more aggressive. As soon as we sit down, four instantly arrive at our table, squeezing in tightly, knitting their hands into ours. Alia and Noura sit beside our Syrian photographer, who turns to them and asks why two are presenting themselves to him.

"She's my sister," says Alia, who says she's 18 but looks much more like 14. "We always go together."

"Where are you from?"

"Baghdad."

"Did you bring your sister here?"

"No, my mother brought us," says Alia, suddenly looking a bit sullen.

"Do you like your mother?" our photographer asks.

"Of course," she answers, slightly defensive. "Now you have to choose between me and my sister."

Sitting beside Mulhem is Dana, who says she's from the "jihad neighborhood of Baghdad," but doesn't name the district. He's trying to negotiate a way to spend time with her to talk about her experience and how she landed the work.

"How much time would you spend with me? What are you going to do?" he asks.

"I'll make you happy in any way you want," Dana says. But first she has to check with her brother, seated just behind Mulhem, about prices and availability. They agree on $100 and a rendezvous tomorrow afternoon (Mulhem doesn't show up). The deal is closed and our evening winds down -- unless we decide to do more business. We decline. The girls are disappointed and we head out in the night.

As we stroll alongside the Mosque of President Hafez Assad, Mulhem tries to calculate the number of prostitutes in Damascus. There were about 40 girls in the Manara nightclub, he says. Now multiple that number by approximately 120 clubs and you have a pretty good estimate. Streetwalkers constitute a smaller number, and who knows how many prostitutes operate in "furnished apartments." As we continue walking down the windy street, Mulhem grows reflective. Referring to Dana, he says, "She's just a child. They're all just children."

One outreach organization for refugee children is the Good Shepherd Nunnery in Damascus' crumbling Old City. The nuns' observations of Syrian prostitution mirror Mulhem's, but they have also met a few Iraqi women in local prisons who've been sold into bondage by their husbands. Mostly, says Sister Mary Claude Naoldaf, "the girls tell me they don't like it but have to do it to support their families."

She adds that in the past year, many of the children that attended nunnery's learning center have "suddenly disappeared" -- most likely taken out of school, she believes, to earn for their families. Her colleague, Sister Therese Mosalam, explains that "to help prevent girls from turning to prostitution, the center offers them computer training courses and helps find them jobs in sewing and gold-

manufacturing factories." But pay is usually about $50 a month --$100 in the best case -- compared with the $40 to $60 sex workers can make per night. "And the job opportunities are very rare," she adds. "I had one girl who waited for three years for the factory job."

The sisters' voices drop as they quietly recall visits to refugee families' homes. Empty refrigerators are common. Some kids have yellowish skin and many look gaunt. Malnutrition, they say, is starting to take hold.

Mouna Kurdy, general manager of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which works in affiliation with the UNHCR, acknowledges that among Iraqi refugees, "parents don't have enough to eat, so they encourage their children to take these jobs."

She grows testy at recent inquiries by the press and humanitarian groups about Iraqi prostitutes in Syria. "And now people are asking about this issue? [The international community] was preparing this war for months. Now that Saddam Hussein isn't here anymore, the problems are supposed to be finished. No. They have been here before the war, during the war, and after the war."

"Somalian and Sudanese worked as prostitutes in Syria, but nobody cared about that," says Abdul Aziz Taha, who's in change of a Red Crescent health clinic in the Damascus suburbs.

Both Taha and Kurdy says that prostitution is a comparatively small worry in light of the basic health problems that Iraqi refugees face, including hepatitis C, diabetes and serious cardiac conditions. Major medical procedures cost on average $2,000, but the Red Crescent is only given a budget of $200 per family, Kurdy says.

Still, given the growing awareness of the problems facing Iraqi refugees -- violence, restricted mobility, diminishing finances -- one wonders why child prostitution in Syria hasn't garnered more attention. The answer might depend on whom you ask. To Mulhem, it's profitable for Syria as a tourist attraction. He believes "there's active collaboration between the club owners and police who turn a blind eye for payoffs." Landis, the American professor in Syria, says that if Syria publicly acknowledged prostitution, that would "mean sanctioning its existence" and expose the country to the sort of shame that an individual family would face.

In fact, Syria newspapers typically replace the word "prostitution" with the euphemistic " act against decency." Talk of drugs, HIV and religion is actively discouraged -- some would say censored -- by the Syrian authorities. And despite numerous inquires, no Iraqi women's organization would respond to questions about this issue.

But the emergence of Iraqi prostitution in Syria, especially among young girls, reflects the dire conditions of the local Iraqi refugee community. One U.N. official, who asked to remain anonymous, admits that the "conspiracy of silence" surrounding prostitution underscores the international community's larger failure to recognize the dire conditions of Iraqi refugees and provide them with a safe haven.

"Every social convention is splitting at the seams because of the implosion of Iraqi society," Landis says. "That place has been blown apart, so all the social barriers have collapsed."

There was a question your reporter should have asked but never did: Who exactly are the pimps for these girls? I'll bet you a significant percentage are Iraqi ex-Ba'athists raising money to finance the insurgents. They have no qualms about dealing drugs, so it would come as no surprise that they sell their female relatives. :-(

Dear Jousho,

Are you all serious??? Is this a serious topic for reasonable discussions "Iraqi Teenage prostitution in Syria" ?? You are trying to say prostitutes do not operate where you come from. How about Lebanese teenage and -overaged ones as well- prostitutes across the world or in the Gulf, let alone in Lebanon itself. Are you all not aware of the insanity irrelevance of the sometimes rediculous topics you keep touching upon in your lebanese-driven "beat-up-on-Syria" campgain? And for what purpose and for what good? Gobbels must be turning over in his grave as this anti-Syria campagain continues unfolding. You experts discuss with anticipation reform in Syria, and the Baath Congress and the threats that will be directed at Syria starting from US sanctions to "border corridors" to "regime changes" to "dramatic changes in the intelligence community" to the "brotherhood possibility of taking over", to "internal unrest" to all the B.S. comments originating some times from hatered filled hearts, or from "think tank experts" who got your Dubbya up to his but in Iraq and Afghanistan..... Most of what I am seeing here is self-satisfying hallucinations. It reminds of a an answer by Yasser Arafat to a reporter when the reporter asked him about the "fears" in somepeople minds of Palestinian infighting when Israel pulls out of a certain area; Arafat answer was :"the fears, or the wishes"? And so is the case of all those new Syrian people lovers, who all of a sudden are so worried about the prosperity, freedom, and the progress of the Syrian People. Well, many thanks,but.... Syria, regeim and People, will not change under pressure. Fifty years of conflict should have tought you better. And when push comes to shove, Syrians will be far ahead of Baath in thier rejection to both the threats and crumbs offered by Dubbya the genious and his cronies in Lebanon or elsewhere. And if it changes, it will not change in the direction some of you wish.Do not waste your time waiting for your scenarios to materialise.Syrians are not Iraqis nor Lebanese because they are ruled by dictators like Saddam or Pimps like the Lebanese politicians who will sell thier dearest to the highest bidder. Syrians paid by blod for what they believe in. And have been standing up to thier enemies for years. Not rubbing elbows and sleeping with the enemy at the first chance.. to be kicked in the but and disposed of like used tissues like some of our niehghbouring regiems. Syrians are talking the only language that it's enemies understand, it bends yes, but it will not crumble. Its enemies know those facts which are lost on some of the geniouses who endow your site with thier "informed" and "westernised" and "enlightened opinion". To all I have a very small advise: eat your heart out. Syria will remain the loud "NO" in this time of subdued "Yeses". And Syria will never give up it's Pan Arab charecter. And again, when push comes to shove, the Syrians will all become Baathists and will all endure and fight. If the poorly armed and stranded Palestinians are capable of forcing the Israelies to retreat, and if Hizbullah managed to get both the US and Israel to run; something like that can be expected from Syria and the Syrians... just watch and remember that surprises such as the one that took place at 2pm on 6 October 1973 are not merely science fiction. They are the manifistation of a people willing to pay the price for thier thier dignity, rights and self-respect in a world where the conventional wisdom is to act cowardly with price tags attached to thier Tuexedos and daydreams filling thier heads.

Yes of course, If I or my daddy stole 17 Billion Dollars of poor Syrian people money and stached it in foreign Bank accounts will be feeling the pinch just as you are now. Mee too, I would be on my knees begging Doubya, Ariel Sharon, Saud and Mubark for another 40 years or untill the last drop of Syrian People oil is drained. Wouldn't you like to be screeming for another 40 years: AHDAFUNA, ONE ETERNAL ARAB NATION WITH ONE ETERNAL ARAB MESSEGE.
UNITY, FREEDOM, SOCIALISM.

Bad news for you Doubya or not. You time is up and Canada or Mars will not be a safe place for you to hide because the Syrian Secret Service is now, and for ever will be tracking your ass and the ass of your daddy for eternity. You will be brought to justice and charged and anyone that helped you Syrian or otherwise will be brought with you and charged too with crimes against the People of Syria.

just who and what are you exactly responding to in your message? If someone has stolen $17 bilion he must have taking courses at the hands of someone belonging to a Washington DC WASP administration... play acting for naive Mudville, USA TV viewers and believing themselves that they are acting in the name of Freedom, Democracy, Transparency and Justice. And having some other fools believe them as well. Vietname? Korea? Venzeulla ? Panama? Guantanamo, Clinton's cigar, Chieny's billions, "sharon of Sabra and Chatila" being called a true friend? drug deals, tobacco deals???? Oh! how about thirty million dead Red Indians??? Who the hell are you fooling and who the hell believes in the B.S. that Dubya is here only to "help" the sweet people of the Middle East. My heart bleeds for those US soldiers carrying the tourch of freedom and lecturing us poor uneducated undemocratic Arabs about Liberty, Freedom, Growth, Equality, "and" at the same time making life in "liberated Iraq" so wonderful that Iraqi teanage girls have to go through the stuff listed in the article. However, they are lucky they are not living in the United States... check with some of the stuff the Hispanic immigrants and the Afro American population in the US and you will be thankfull. The middle East does not claim to have the "lady of Liberty" welcoming the newly arriving slaves.... get off our backs and get busy with something more usefull, and try not to respond to messages when you are under the influence of alcohol or something else easily availlable at any corner in the land of the proud...enough is enough. Go B.S. other people.... as to us; we know you and your allies inside and out !

Hey "Ausama," if the Ba'th regime is as great as you say it is, why doesn't it subject itself to elections and let the people decide?

Anybody can convince himself he's a genius if he locks himself in a room and interacts with no one. Why doesn't bashar step out of his room and compete? Isn't he the most brilliant person on earth???

As for the Lebanese politicians "who go for the highest bidder," please spare me! We were the ones who were occupied, not you! So take your self-righteousness and burry yourself with it. For all this talk about "Arabism," the regime in Syria is nothing but a Alawi gang that buys its grip on power.

The corruption of Ba'thi officials surpasses even that of Nigerian officials. And they go for cheaper too.

You're Ridiculous!

Ausuama?

Getting defensive about your corrupt regime will not shift the issue away!.

I do not even try to discuss with civility to the men of this retarded regime, nor do I even reply to their ridiculous pride, but in your case, I just wanted to tell you that you are a despicable creature. I frankly read only 2 lines of your message and could not read any of the rest of it as I pay no attention to what any of you say. You all came from the school of the late criminal Hafez Assad who once told Diane Sawyer that Syria was/is more democratic than the USA.

Your day is approaching, and the civilized world will finally come to the help of the Syrian people.

The article wasn't talking about prostitution in the manner you interpreted it, though your defensive attitude must show more of your ignorance, and narrow mindedness. Speaking of prostitution, Syrian girls in the Tijara quarter coming from the place where it is said their people have the power tells more about your governing gang, and how much it cares even about the people that came from their villages. This is a criminal regime of a degree not seen in the history of mankind. A regime of shallow creatures like yourself.

Eat your heart out. Syria is still there saying NOOOOOOOOOO outloud and clear. As to your newly discovered "suffering" Syrian people, I advise RIP, they are all fine and well and they do not need you. As to to being Baathist, I am Not! but now while the dogs are off the leach against Syria, I am more Baathist than the Bathists themselves, because it is Syria- my country and my people- you are after. And just a whisper in your little ear; if the US' created Osama bin Ladin and the Zarqawi ghost is scaring the US shitless, beaware the Syrians -people, regime and ARAB ACTUAL solidarity with them.. Compared to Syria,Iraq and Afghanistan might sound like a mere stroll in the park. Ask Golda, Rabin, Barak, Luberani or the US friend and ally (the Butcher of Sabra and Shatila), they may tell you a few secrets. Eat your hearts out, or!!!!......try to understand the stuff you are talking about and dealing with. See you... and I am sorry you are pulling us to such a low level in responding to you, but our nerves have thier limits. If you doubt it, ask the Captain of the New Jersy or the pilots of the two US planes downed by Syrian rockets a while back. They might give you some insight..... wake up guys...IT IS SYRIA YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT......
P.S. Never mind Tijara, it is just a small area in Damascus, worry about a whole ranch -yours if you have the oney- whose name starts with the letter "L". But to your dismay I should add, that the letter "L' does also stands for our honest true nieghbours, stands for Fairouz, stands for the 6 May martyrs and stands for Arabism and Southern Resistance and pride. That, that is the difference between Syrians and others.WE love our brothers because WE know and believe that we are one and the same, but some of our "brothers" have a preference for different tastes .......... just wait and see... Syria has its prid, its army, its proud and Pan Arab oriented people and it will overcome this fanfare; others what have they got if they do not try to rediscover thier origin and true worth....???? ever asked yourself?

Mr. Ausoma: Keep barking. Your days are about to become hell.

Saddam spoke the same language before. We all know who Saddam and Assad are, and who maintained their power for that long. However, nothing lasts forever, and your game is about to be over.

Come speak in our Forum, Forum.shrc.org
I'd love to see your logic there.

As for the news regarding the treatment of children in the Syrian courts for political reasons as the Amnesty report stated above, this adds nothing new to the crimes of the regime. It is a regime that is imbeded in Evil doings, and it will be so for as long as it is permitted to survive. But the end will certainly come, and please, do not confuse Syria with the criminal regime.

God bless the USA and Syria for this time, they will be together against oppression.

And if you answer me please answer with respect, not like your people in the air port treeting us like a dirt. And you should know, because of me and other Syrian immigrants the whole country still standing on its feet and I wish your government kept a data to show that. I looked around to see one single monument or work of improvement that could represent what a regime have done in the past 40 years, somehing make them proud they accomplished, there was nothing. I saw how they have stolen everything’s of value in our history and put Hafez or his son on it. I saw those stupid ugly statuses of Hafez and his pictures on the back of cars windsheilds. I’m glad there is a forum that we can express our view so you can hear it. All you have to do is visit Teshreen newspaper, internet site, and see how all the news goes around one young man who has no experience, have nothing so far to be proud of, filling the news like there are no one else exist or deserve to be mentioned in that country except him. Give us a break and listen to the people. Do not talk about baathesem or arabesem, the regime did not defend the baatheis brothers in Iraq, actually he captured them and gave them to USA military. And you can fool only yourself if you believe that people love him, they have no choice.

Alawite Ausama, I have bad news for you, your ass will be cleaning the streets of Latakia 15 hours a day on a bowl of soup, and your teenage sisters will be spending rough time on their back paying up the theft your human scum daddy incurred.
“ARAB ACTUAL solidarity with them..” Oh yah, Ala Iraq style, I am impressed by the solidarity Arabs offered Iraq. Have you visited Yemen lately and seen all the Iraqi teenage girl spending 10 hours in the morning on their feet working as hotel maids and Ten hours at night on their back in the same hotel. You sisters will be doing just that when the Arab comes to offer their solidarity.

Iraqis said noooooooooooo too, you seen how they fought for the regime. This is how 15 Million Syrians will protect you.

This is the problem with Baathist…Delusional. I guess you will be the one denying that your sisters were drafted by the Syrian Revolutionaries, even though the whole world watching a huge line of armed men taking turn on them. It is coming dude. It is coming in less than 24 months.

You are sorry your nerve have limits? Dude, we got nerves of steel and we will all be eternally erect, you see, we think Abu Guraib was just the work of pussycats. You aint got a clue what you bastard Alawites, Baathist and those who ever supported them will face.

It’s army is proud? You actually have an army, you are not talking about those subhuman that are the Alwaites enforcers are you, OOOH I see, you must be really ignorant, you actually bought that Baathist Bolshevic styled brainwashing that you have an army that is capable of defending the homeland and defeating the enemy. Even with Afghanistan and Iraq and Lebanon, you still believe what you are saying.

Thank you for posting this article. Even as a Syrian, I was relatively uninformed about how widespread prostitution was, and surely did not have any idea that it was as prolific as this article claims.

Very informative. Sadly, however, I believe the article will be received by many Syrians (especially the socially and religiously conservative) not with pity, but with violence.

It is an interesting note that there is a nunnery (ah, the irony of Shakespeare comes to mind...) with a program to fight this problem and none run by Muslim women--at least none that I know of.

Ausama

back off; an article about Iraqi girls selling their body because their family is starving is not an anti-syrian item. It just depicts a sad reality.
Syria cannot provide a livelihood to everyone. Many Syrians are without a job and we have the returnees from Lebanon to take care of.

The international community should be alerted to the problem and some relief be provided to the some 700 000 refugees from "liberated Iraq"

Fact: I am an Allawi

Fact: I am not, nor have I ever been a beneficiary, nor has any of my family.

Fact: I hate the Allawis who are in power because they are despicable, ignorant, and bad.

Fact: I hate the Sunnis who help them, because those Sunnis not only benefit, but also keep this regime going.
_____________________

So, we have Ausama defending the indenfesible, and changing a subject that primarily brings a noble attention to what the Iraqi people have had to endure as a result of US past mistakes starting with the support they gave to the regime of Saddam Hussein, and then the war they both caused
to the Iraqi people and the Sanctions they were both instrumental in
imposing on Iraq, and the War of Liberation that was a planned action after a long UN imposed Sanctions that resulted in destroying Iraq and
enriching the few (fortunately they are in jail now unlike their
contrepart Syrian Baathists). I also add that what is ahppening in Iraq is not really a failure of the US policy, but a success of the Zionist one that did not aim at all to liberate Iraq from the dictatorship the West had imposed on it as they have been imposing that of the Assad regime on Syria, and the real real aim was and is to destroy the dignity
and wealth of the Iraqi people, and that will be llowed soon with a
similar action on Syria. This plan is succeeding, and as usual, people
get encircled in the present forgetting the origin of a conflict.

I am Allawi, and it disturbs me , of course that some of my Syrian well meaning posters who I am sure are of good heart and intentions generalize
about Allawis, and classify me in the same garbage can they classify the Allawis who are in power. My freinds, I am not going to defend the regime as I hate it a lot more than any of you might be hating it, but I say to
you that those disgusting Allawis who are in power have Sunnis coopearting with them (though the Sunnis' interests are not power but financial gains which they are getting abundantly, and I hate those Sunnis primarily because they are enabling those Fxxxing Allawis to
continue to hold power for their self interest as well. How can you
forget Aref Dalilah, Abd Alziz Al Kheir, Badawi Al JAbal, the people whose throats were cut at the begining of the Assad regime while the later developped oppositions did not even voice a shout of care to the Assad regime to put them on trial first, something they surely must be reemmbring now..., how can you call this regime Allawi regime when most of the cultivated Allawis have been against the Assad disgusting family long before any Ikhwan (muslim brotherhood) was touched by this regime, and those who participated at torturing the first prisonners were none than Generals of Sunni background such as ALi Madani, Hikmat Shahabi, Naji Jamil, and so mmany others.

Back to the subject:

Mr. Ausama feels defensive because though the subject is not about Syian girls, nor is it about the prostitution of the regime, but yet because
the subject which deals mentions that Syrians are involved as pimps, and
or as customers, and this is taken place ion Damascus itself, and it
talks about what is going on on bars the regime helped create beside the
mosques that it also created. He is feeling defensive because the
undelining question might be to ask what made Syians such moally bankrupt
to exploit their Iraqi brothers and sisters of Iraq in such a manner? The question might be asked why the Arabs are customers in teh first place when they know they are exploiting those Arab girls as well. Arabs who come from the Gulf region have no issue looking in teh whole wold for pleasing their geneitals,a nd apart fom that, they have no other thing that opccupies their minds at all. Syria was different before the corrupt gang took over power in 1970. The Allawis and Sunnis of this regime are morally banckrupt, and especially the Allawis will be paying a big price. Do the powerful Alalwis even care? Absolutely not, for they all will be outside of Syria when the moment will come, and the rest oof the alawis will be looking for survival as the Sunnis of the Saddam's geographical area are doing now. The rich will be safe. It is always the poor that is the target of revenge, and also to the real racsist attitudes of the others. The Rich and Powerful Alalwis never feel any of the hatred some Sunis express. bassam@inorbit.com

Would be interesting if someone will publish or post about the involvement of the Syrian Christian Sects with Baath party (other than Aflaq) or in what way they are benefiting in terms of past and present official appointments or commercial interests. It is a fact that they have no responsibilities in the Human Rights Violation and Criminal Abuse the other sects including Sunni’s committed ( as mentioned by our Alawites friend Bassam). Maybe Professor Landis would study this important topic that is not covered at all.

I agree, I believe that Joshua Phillips was horrified at the US and not Syria. He was also horrified that the US is no longer accepting Iraqi refugees. It will have to accept them again, eventually. The UNHCR office in Damascus used to send most of the Iraqi political assylum seekers to the US.

Yes, it is may be so: America gives life, and America takes it away!

If America wanted to keep the regime, I think the regime will stay. The stupid opposition parties closed the doors on America to come to their help. They chose to let Ghadri and the regime to do so instead, and so the regime will stay another 40 years, and only then, some one will remember some how that it would have been better to bring the Americans and give them what they want directly instead of letting the criminals do so on their behalf to keep Syria occupied by the most criminal gangs on planet Earth.

Thank you for your post. I'm a Sunni Syrian and I, too, hate it when ignorant people generalize so comfortably about the various communities in Syria. For those who WANT TO KNOW, your comments are illuminating. Allawis have given many patriots to Syria and, sadly, are probably the most hurt by the current Assad regime. It's not about Sunni, Allawi, Christian, Druze or whatever...it's about ordinary Syrians who want education, jobs, dignity, security, freedom and equal rights.

Since this administration represented the most opportune one and yet failed to address the Syria issue, we have completely closed the door on America. In fact we have done so way back in the time of BOZO Reagan /Shultz administration. After few hot air speeches that kid Bush gave, he caused so much upheaval upon our ranking file and support members. The new inexperienced members and the young were demanding to seek U.S. help. The older aged Board members decided to give the young members a crash lesson about American Deception Tactics that U.S. politicians study at Yale. It was for a limited duration of 90 days trial. Was completed successfully when we posted Ali Shamkhani photo on the site. That was a good lesson to the party young members. Now they are united solidly behind our Plan code name STARGATE2007.

To all those who are still really dreaming about the US intentions in the area; namely -and according to them- Justice, Freedom and Democracy,...etc,..etc; an article by Zvi Bar'el in the Israeli Haaretz daily might shed some light on why "some of us" are against the current US policy. In a nut shell, yes, we all want to change and become better, but not with an American gun pointed at our head and an ignorant daydreamer cheering up the destruction of regimes and nations. Least of all when we know that what the US really wants is our resources, identity and the preserving of the hegeomeny of Israel over us (although naturally and obviously Mr. Bar'el would not allude to that directly in his article). See, even the Israelies have gotten it right.. The article titled "Interim report card for Condoleeza" appeared on 26 June 2005 can be read at:

Ask who allowed the Americans to come and meddle in our affairs?

America tries to interfere with each and every country's politics, but what makes one country weaker to the American agenda?

Corruption and tyranny, which leads to an American alibi to intervene.

Once our house is in order, the Americans will find it much tougher to enter without knocking, and we will have a chance then to decide whether to let them in (or not) and in which room they should sit.

To Ausama,
What you are saying that the US want, is our resources?. So, is this a problem? People around the world are begging the US to use their resources. Is the US using China resources now, all Chinese are happy for that, this is reality. We are in a world to be in and to drive your car you need to participate. That what most people want (except you and some people in the government who prefer not), anyhow they been using our resources forever and who ever there, baatheis or Kings like Saudi. This scary tactics and the making of enemies to scare us, is too much to bear and it seem only thing they can up with these dictators. After all, the same official who telling us these lies in the end you will see them somewhere in Europe or the Americans living there. During their governing they fight hard to get themselves and their children Canadian or American citizenship, example all those military officials from Shishakly to Hafez Assad brother. And all of them end up with big chunk of money can support them and generation after that. Actually they end up investor in the same market they said they hate. As a citizen lived in Syria, the last 40 years of dictators regimes has taught us the following:

-People can defend themselves better than any type of government (example south Lebanon), so do not believe any regime who dose not empower people.
-People when they take things in their hand they can solve their problems (example Palestinian intifada)
-Stagnation (which equal to stability in the current government economic plans) is not better than dynamic movement for advancement (off course the Assad father main theme was that his regime provide stability and see what happened)
-It is not enough to say that if an Israeli newspaper said that, mean automatically it is a bad thing
-Isolation is not good for the country and it enforce backwardness, that what actually the regime was doing in the last 40 years
-People power is in their participation not in leaving them out
-Government who cannot keep up with change is doomed to go

The truth of the matter is that Arabs are fighting a monster that they really subscribe to - Slavery the behometh.

Syria is a third world country today and as such must maintain a third world outlook on the factors that determine its level of existence.

Money, then elitism are the dividing factors that weaken individuals and their nations. The ultimate sin that is read here is wishing to unleash the US beast on their own country to get rid of the very structure that the US feigns to keep in power.

Prior to the US preparing itself to lead the so called first world into the fruits of its colonial heydays, the US masqueraded as a honest shepherd but it is changing again from a wolf in sheep's clothing to the beast it always was.

The west has no use for Arabs, History tells a true story. The danger is when they have what you got (the oil), they will once again turn to the bread basket of the world for their final feeding fenzy that is to liberate them from the 'backward' third world.

This is about unleasing the forces of the predator onto the prey. The predator being the child of Europe the US versus the rest of the world.
